The Tampa Bay Times is looking for someone to shine a light on St. Petersburg, a city that in the last generation has transformed itself from a sleepy destination for seniors and snowbirds into an acclaimed tourist destination with a thriving downtown that teems with skyrise condos, craft beer joints, bike trails and a bustling waterfront. How the city grows over the next generation will be decided by such looming issues as the future of the Tampa Bay Rays, climate change, affordable housing, persistent racial inequities, the battle to maintain home rule and the evolution of downtown. We’re looking for a reporter who can cover this year’s highly anticipated mayoral race and capture not just the personalities and politics of a heated campaign, but who can also help the reader understand all that’s at stake. Navigating the byzantine politics at City Hall is a must, but getting into the neighborhoods and talking with residents will be critical as well. Social media and database skills recommended. This reporter is expected to break news, turn quick insightful, explanatory reads, experiment with story forms and step back for smart enterprise. A desire to strengthen the bond with readers is key.
